Mr. Lee remains ‘critically ill’ in the intensive-care unit of Singapore General Hospital

The Singapore government Wednesday said the condition of former Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew has deteriorated further. Here, Mr. Lee waves to supporters in 2011.

SINGAPORE—The Singapore government Wednesday said the condition of former Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew has deteriorated further, a day after it said his situation had worsened because of an infection.

Mr. Lee remains “critically ill” in the intensive-care unit of Singapore General Hospital, a statement from the prime minister’s office said.

Mr. Lee, 91, had been admitted to the hospital on Feb. 5 for severe pneumonia.

The prime minister’s office has been providing periodic updates on Mr. Lee’s health. Until recently, it had said Mr. Lee’s condition was largely unchanged, after a statement on Feb. 28 saying his condition had improved slightly. The statement Wednesday is the third since March 6.

Singapore’s current prime minister, Lee Hsien Loong, is Mr. Lee’s son. The elder Mr. Lee has suffered with recurring bouts of poor health in recent years. He was hospitalized last year for an infection, fever and cough.

Singapore’s first and longest-serving prime minister, Mr. Lee led the Southeast Asian nation from 1959 to 1990, and is widely credited for transforming the small trading entrepôt into a wealthy financial center after it became a republic in 1965.

Known among leaders abroad for his keen intellect and regarded by many as an Asian elder statesman, Mr. Lee has also drawn criticism from rights groups that accused him of muzzling the domestic media and restricting civil liberties, including the implementation of strict rules on public speech and assembly.

Mr. Lee retained cabinet-level advisory roles after handing over the premiership to Goh Chok Tong in 1990. He left the cabinet in May 2011 after his party won the general election with its slimmest victory margin ever, though it remains overwhelmingly in control of parliament. He was re-elected unopposed to his seat.

Since 2009, Mr. Lee has been fighting a neurological disease that makes it difficult for him to walk, his daughter Lee Wei Ling, a neuroscientist, wrote in Singapore’s Sunday Times in 2011.
