Just in case someone is playing too loud or singing too loud, it will compress the signal volume to a set ratio so that it will not over or under powering the rest of the singers or musicians (eg bass drum). The sound man willl compress the signal of individual channels so that the over or under powering is taken care. It control the Threshold, Ratio (between input and output), Gain, all in one at the same time.
Gain Knob: This is to move the whole spectrum of the signal up and down. Supposedly, if the level volume of individual channels has up to a level that causing feedback, can't turn up anymore and yet the sound is still soft at the channel, use that channel gain to push up the volume without causing the feedback. Be careful that the maximum gain should not exceed the ZERO (keep within -18 to 0). It should be remained in the green indicator. If it goes into yellow indicator once a while still ok. But the moment it goes into red, means the sound is almost crip. Turn the gain down immediately.
